Learning from a corpus of students' academic writing

This paper summarizes the results of a study based on students´ academic writings. The is grounded Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory and pedagogy, in particular 3x3 matrix, SFL framework successfully implemented Australian schools (Humphrey, Martin, Dreyfus & Mahboob, 2010) Teaching Learning Cycle (Callaghan Rothery, 1988). took place at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, with 33 students from Humanities content subject. an English medium instruction higher education institution where, for most students, not their mother tongue. Samples students’ writing were analysed classroom to identify successful moves express field, manner tenor genre argumentative essays. These samples then used provide specific before they asked start constructing texts independently. Feedback was provided joint construction finally produced final Students’ confidence levels abilities measured, knowledge surveys, beginning end term, grades compared those previous cohort correlated term writing-ability levels. Our suggest that there increase better than cohort. When correlating we found two potential correlations, one positive lower negative over-confident students.
